Where is the proper place to shoot a deer and having it drop right on the spot?

or where is the proper spot to shot it and how long does it take for it to usually dieWhere is the proper place to shoot a deer and having it drop right on the spot?
As JD C has already advised right BEHIND the front leg will be a good hit in the Heart and Lungs (Vitals) area. A shot in the Spinal column will ';usually'; drop them on the spot. There are way too many variables to be able to answer your question as to how long it will take for a Deer to expire..EVERY case is different, and determined by the individual shot and the angle of penetration. This applies to Firearms, Black Powder, or Bowhunting it doesn't matter which method you use to hunt.....ALL DIFFERENT....Where is the proper place to shoot a deer and having it drop right on the spot?
Head shots usually work... other than that, right about midsection behind the front shoulder. Frothy!
the proper place is to shoot him right under the shoulder..so it can go right threw the heart..he'll drop in about half a second..

If done properly, it will die on the spot. If not, you may be following a blood trail for a long time. A good trailing dog helps, too.
Either a head shot or a neck shot will put the deer down in its tracks. A heart/lung shot will drop a deer very quickly. However, due to its nervous system, a deer can often run 100 yards after a good solid shot to the heart. I cannot say how much a deer is aware of its condition after having been shot in this manner, but I suspect that the shock to its system is sufficient that it is essentially dead from the time the bullet hits it.
if the deer is broad side put the bullet through the front shoulder so it breaks both front shoulders they will drop in their tracks just don't plan on using any of the meat from the front shoulders .if the deer is facing you aim for the white spot at the top of the throat.
I broke the neck of the first deer I ever killed. No wasted meat and no tracking.
neck shot
You got many good answers.JD's was right on.Perfect answer.Being an ethical hunter to me means to shoot for the largest collective vital area.I tell my new hunters to try to shoot them in the middle of the front half of the body. How far they travel then,or whether they drop or run has nothing to do with the gun.It is luck, really.A neck shot is the best to drop one,and will, but requires you hit a 3'' spot or so.The chest is 9'' or so.How far away / how confident a marksman / woman you are should determine which you choose,in my opinion.Become proficient with the gun you will use before you go.Not a different gun.THE gun.Shoot it and know where it's hitting, and see if you yourself need practice. The quarry deserves this from you.
The fact that you are asking the question at all indicates that you are a responsible hunter. Award yourself a slap on the back - if only there were more like you. Do not - unless you are highly accomplished, or super-confident - ever go for a head shot, and certainly not a spine shot (in fact never go for a spine shot, there is never a good enough reason to do this).

The shot that will always bring down a beast is to the heart.

As some of the other posters have said, it's behind the front shoulder blade. Wait 'til your quarry is broadside on to you and take the shot. You always have more time than you think, so don't panic.

Remember, if in any doubt - don't take the shot. There will always be another day and another deer. We have a responsibility to treat animals and the art of hunting with respect. If we don't, we only have ourselves to blame if the 'antis' start campaigning against us.

Good luck.
I use the well proven and tried 30-06 that has been on the battle fields in almost every war that American has fought.

My recommendation to you is to buy a silouette of a deer and mark the spot with a red round shooting spotter that will stick to the target. You are going for a lung shot. Above the front leg ten inches. Ten inches behind the front leg.

Practice makes perefect. When you can group them in a three inch group at 200 yards then you are good to go.

I do head shots young Man...................
now i have shot many deer and when i do deer management i go for the tough shots and when i shoot doe in the head they kick alot and i have shot many directly in the heart and blew it up that kicks alot too just because of the nerves but i shot a deer once when i was little in the spine not on porpose but when i hit him he went down like a sack of potatoes and didn't kick so i would have to say the spine
Shoot it in the neck and it will drop right there.
for an absolute, FALL WHERE YOU SHOT IT kill, use a gun like a marlin .444 or larger, shoot so as to hit the deer in the head, about 4'; below where the horns meet the head,

you won't have a trophy, but you don't waste any meat either
well if u want to drop a deer in its tracks, u should shoot it in the head, or in the spine. Both of these are very bad shots however. A shot to the head could hit the jaw and leave the animal with no jaws. Ive seen it happen. One time this guy tried to shoot a doe in the head with a slug. It hit the jaw and took it rite off. The doe was still alive and they never found it. It most likely died of infection or starvation.

When u shoot a deer in the spine, they generally r stll alive. Ud have to shoot them again or cut its throat. A good shot is rite behind the front leg. U can see the paddle bone, and u need to shoot rite behind it. This is where the vitals r. It may not drop the deer in its tracks (it actually most likely not) but it will kill it cleanly and quickly. The best shot is in the liver, because it is easy to track. It also takes them down quickly. A heart shot is also good, as is a lung shot.

It generally takes a deer to die about like 5 seconds if u shoot it rite. THey generally run about one hunndred yards bfor dropping dead. This is especially true with a heart or liver shot.

hope this ansers ur question.
If your a steady aim and good shot clip the backbone in two Instant. Other than directly behind the front shoulder and he won't last long. Of course it also depends how the deer is standing to know where to place your shot.
Try to get it in a 3/4s position. At an angle to you sort of diagonal. if you hit it at an angle so you shoot through the whole midsection you could hit the lung and jugular witch is a good fatal shot
Hitting the spine will at least drop them instantly. You may need to do some throat cutting to finish the job. However, the spine is a darn small target, even for the best marksman. You're more likely to graze or miss if you actually try to shoot at it (with very close overhead shots at standing deer aside). Shoot right behind the shoulder (assuming you're shooting directly broadside and at the same elevation as the deer), and you'll likely hit the heart and both lungs. That'll kill him dead, dead, dead before he can leave your site. Good chance that shot will also drop him in his tracks, depending on the caliber and type of bullet.
right between the eyes like the good old boys do. hemight twitch a bit but he will be quite dead.
