Looking for a deer rifle, What is a good, fairly cheap rifle to get?

Check out a Savage/Stevens bolt action rifle. They're a very good buy for the money and available in numerous calibers. Also, combinations of rifle and scope are often a package deal. Check with Wal Mart or another major retailer in your area.Looking for a deer rifle, What is a good, fairly cheap rifle to get?
The Marlin 336 30-30 makes a nice deer rifle.

METROPOL is right. Any Savage or Stevens package will do just fine for just about any hunting situation. The Remington 700 is also another extremely popular choice, but you will pay more for them than the Savage/Stevens.
Lots of good answers. Depending on what you consider ';fairly cheap,'; the used gun market is also full of other sporterized military rifles. Swedish Mausers as well as the basic German ones, Springfields, and SMLE's all can be good choices.
Mosin Nagant 91/30 or M44

around $80

bolt action, 5 round internal magazine. shoots 7.62x54mmR, cheap practice ammo $60 per300 rounds, hunting ammo $14 per box of 20.

about the same power of .308
Don't get the Remington 710 or 770. They are garbage. Do a web search, and you will see a whole list of complaints. I know the local Remington warranty gunsmith, and he absolutely hates them.

As most of the other posters have said, the Savage, or the Stevens (which is made by Savage) are pretty much the best low-cost rifle out there. The reliability is excellent. Service is great if there are any issues. And they come in a host of chamberings, so you can pick one that suits your needs. If you are unsure of which caliber to pick, you can always go with .30-06 or .270, as they are more or less the benchmark that the other calibers are measured by. I personally prefer .308, and 7-08 for those that don't like recoil. But you get a bit more bang for your buck (literally) with the slightly more powerful rounds. If you are planning on hunting deer primarily, I would avoid the .243 or .223. They are both good cartridges, but many people feel they are a bit light for deer under adverse conditions.

As for other options, If you can spend the extra $100-175, a Remington 700 is an excellent choice as well. They are far better than the 710 and 770. If your shots are going to be in wooded areas and under 200 yards, the Marlin lever action in .30-30 or .35 Remington, as the others have suggested, would also be an excellent choice. While those cartridges may not have the longer range of more potent rounds, they are great for deer and other medium game within their effective range. I use a .35 Remington on big Texas hogs, and in no way feel under-gunned.

Good luck, and let us know which way you end up going.
If you will be in a place with brush or somewhere that limits you shot range to around 200 yards or less, a marlin 336 in 30-30 win or .35 rem would do nicely. If you are in more open country, a 30-06 spr. or .270 winchester will fit the bill out to as far as most people can shoot.
remington model 710. they are sold at academy and come in many calibers. i think 243, 270, 30-06, 308 and 7mm-08. its a grey synthetic stock, bolt action, and comes with a bushnell scope all for about 300 bucks. when academys put em on sale ive seen em as low as 269.99. this is what i got for my first gun and it has killed many deer, as well as coyotes, hogs and a bobcat. the main thing is to make sure the gun fits you, and you love the way it looks, feels, etc. make yourself happy before anyone else because you are going to be the one shooting it
Consider a Stevens model 200 chambered in either .270, 308 or 30-06.... I will stay out of the argument as to which cartridge is best... I like the .308 for deer but the .270 and the 30-06 have legions of fans also that hunt deer......
