For deer I would say 300 yards if you do your part. I would use 130gr.Biggest animal a .270 110gr barnes TSX can kill? What would be the maximum distance it would kill a deer at?
According to the Winchester Product Ballistics Service Manuel for 2008 you are not using the proper or most effective bullet weight for Hunting Deer. They recommend you use the 130, 140, or 150 only for Hunting Deer.* The maximum range is recommended to be 300 yards.* The vast majority of big and small game is harvested within 100 yards or less.* The 270 is capable of harvesting Deer, Antelope, Mule Deer, Whitetail Deer, Black Bear, Elk, Moose, Brown Bear, Caribou, and Eland, but only if you use the proper bullet weight and design of the bullet.*
A deer at 300-350 yards and an Elk with a VERY VERY well placed shot (100-150 yards or under); remember; Jack O'Connor's spouse killed an Elephant with a 30.06 so size isn't always the issue.
